Connection is sacred. We’re not more than a text or FaceTime apart, yet the Covid-19 pandemic has created a mental and emotional isolation that contradicts the ease of connection. Meanwhile, our day-to-day becomes more of a solo adventure. We find ourselves drifting off into thought staring at colorful items in the candy isle. The experience of a trip on the Metro just doesn’t hit like it used to. Shot entirely on 35mm film, A Year Without Hugs offers a series of images depicting a lonely red balloon traveling through familiar spaces. It speaks to a time of self-reflection, solitude, and reassessing our life’s trajectory and connection to self. My hope is that viewers of this project will find an appreciation for just how far they’ve come.
